SUMMARY:A Year Without Summer
DESCRIPTION:2025 – a year without summer. The world seems detached\, shrouded in darkness and devoid of all certainty. A reality in which daily survival becomes a ritual\, despair and ecstasy dance hand in hand. \nThe year 1816 originally went down in history as the “Year Without a Summer.” After the eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia\, the sky was filled with ash\, the sun disappeared\, the harvests failed—and the world starved. Eighteen-year-old Mary spent the cold summer months with other poets on Lake Geneva\, where storms and darkness inspired her to write ghost stories. Mary invented Dr. Frankenstein\, a scientific genius who forced nature to submit to his will and ended up destroying everything in his path with his monster\, assembled from body parts. \nFlorentina Holzinger and her ensemble explore the stories we tell about our bodies\, health and identity\, our decay and our environment: the pursuit of immortality in the 21st century\, medical promises of rejuvenation\, and the dangers of uncontrolled technological growth in a world shaped by AI\, robotics\, and bioengineering. A Year Without Summer tells of the enhancement of nature to the point of perversion and is an attempt to pit the promise of eternal life against certain death. \nBut what happens when creation gives birth to a monster?

SUMMARY:A Year Without Summer
DESCRIPTION:Radical\, energetic\, uncompromising: Florentina Holzinger’s work is one of the most impressive in the current cultural landscape. At the 2026 Venice Biennale\, Holzinger is representing her home country\, Austria\, with the performance Seaworld Venice\, which is currently the talk of the art world. From the 2026/27 season onwards she will join the artistic management team at Berlin’s Volksbühne theatre. In her excessive stage spectacles\, the Viennese choreographer liberates the female body from beauty norms and rigid gender roles\, showing it in all its vulnerability and strength. The asphalt Festival has showcased Holzinger’s boundary-pushing works since the beginning of her career\, and is now presenting her latest work as a co-production. A Year without Summer was invited to the 2026 Theatertreffen Berlin as one of the ten most remarkable productions of the season. \nOriginally\, 1816 went down in history as the “year without a summer”. After the eruption of the Tambora volcano in Indonesia\, the sky is full of ash\, the sun disappears\, crops fail – and the world is starving. The 18-year-old Mary spends the cold summer months with other poets on Lake Geneva\, where storms and darkness inspire them to tell horror stories. Mary imagines Dr Frankenstein\, a scientific genius who forces nature to bend to his will and ends up destroying everything with his monster\, assembled from corpses‘ parts. \nFlorentina Holzinger and her ensemble explore stories about bodies\, health and identities\, our decay and our environment: the quest for immortality in the 21st century\, medical promises of rejuvenation\, and the dangers of uncontrolled technological growth in a world shaped by AI\, robotics and bioengineering. »A Year without Summer« tells of the improvement of nature to the point of perversion and is an attempt to play off the promise of eternal life against certain death. Holzinger’s latest theatrical coup is a mixture of musical and horror story\, a tightrope walk between absolute horror and great beauty with beguilingly quiet\, gentle moments.

SUMMARY:Lake Constance Étude
DESCRIPTION:SEAWORLD VENICE \, Florentina Holzinger’s contribution to the Austrian Pavilion at this year’s Venice Biennale\, will find a unique resonance in Bregenz on July 11\, 2026: as a composition for four percussionists\, ten performers\, a crane\, and a bell. Holzinger’s Études are unique\, site-specific performances in which she prepares and develops the themes and elements for her large-scale productions. The Lake Constance Étude for Bregenz invites the audience to experience a contemporary ritual on the shores of Lake Constance. \nBodies and objects plunge into the water and emerge transformed. Accompanied by drumbeats\, they form a freely suspended structure\, a “wind chime on steroids.” In her Lake Constance Étude\, Florentina Holzinger uses motifs from folk tales in which mostly female underwater creatures must now share their underwater world with the trash hidden beneath the surface\, in a seemingly idyllic landscape. In a hybrid ritual\, the Lake Constance Étude lends new meaning to concepts like sin and redemption. Above\, around\, and within Lake Constance\, the performers connect with their technical equipment and inscribe themselves into the already artificially altered natural world. \nThe Lake Constance Study was developed specifically for the Kunsthaus Bregenz and the complex ecology of Lake Constance. It brings together key elements from Florentina Holzinger’s practice: the orchestration of performative images of a feminism underpinned by technology and desire\, mechanical elements\, and physical performance conjure new myths from the stillness of the water.

SUMMARY:Études
DESCRIPTION:SEAWORLD VENICE will unfold beyond the Giardini della Biennale across the city through performances titled Études – a body of work she has developed since 2020\, consisting of choreographic exercises and performative actions staged in public spaces. \nAccording to Frederic Chopin\, ‘an Étude is a musical composition of considerable difficulty\, designed to provide practice material for an instrument and its player’. Yet\, they are designed to ‘always please the audience in concert’. Holzinger’s site-specific performances become compositions between bodies\, sound and architecture. \nThe Opening Étude will take place on 6 May\, 2026 \nThe attendance is free. Due to limited capacity\, advance registration is requested. Registration for the Opening Étude starts on 27 April\, 2026 via https://www.seaworldvenice.at/.

SUMMARY:Sancta by Hindemith
DESCRIPTION:Opera performance by Florentina Holzinger with Paul Hindemith’s opera Sancta Susanna\, sacred works and new compositions in German\, Latin and English. \n“So help me\, my Savior against yours” – despite her environment that is hostile to pleasure and the body\, a young nun in Paul Hindemith’s one-act opera Sancta Susanna discovers her body as a means of experiencing herself and God. Hindemith’s open display of female desire on the opera stage had the potential to cause scandal. In advance of concern\, the Stuttgart State Theaters withdrew the planned premiere in 1922. A good hundred years later\, Sancta Susanna is now coming to the stage in Stuttgart for the first time – in an opera performance by Florentina Holzinger\, who brings bodies into spectacular borderline experiences in her works. Holzinger follows Susanna’s act of self-assertion with her vision of a holy mass: Bach\, Rachmaninoff\, metal\, noise and contemporary compositions come together in a musical tour de force in which church rites and mysteries are appropriated\, but also their connection to sacrifice and Violence is processed. SANCTA counters the religious discipline and punishment of sexuality as a path to spiritual ecstasy with a pleasurable alternative. In search of transcendence\, body modification artists* twist the religious themes of crucifixion wounds\, penetration\, cannibalism and transformation; Show magicians* show their interpretations of biblical miracles; the Sistine Chapel becomes a climbing wall\, the opera becomes a rock musical\, God becomes a robot\, Jesus Christ becomes a Jesus Christ superstar. The Holy Mass becomes a spectacle. Magic and miracles\, says Holzinger\, must become a real possibility. Spider-like and dark\, loud and excessive\, funny and cathartic\, SANCTA challenges religious conventions while simultaneously renewing them.

Spider-like and dark\, loud and excessive\, funny and cathartic\, SANCTA challenges religious conventions while simultaneously renewing them.
