SUMMARY:Sancta by Hindemith
DESCRIPTION:Opera performance by Florentina Holzinger with Paul Hindemith’s opera Sancta Susanna\, sacred works and new compositions in German\, Latin and English. \n“So help me\, my Savior against yours” – despite her environment that is hostile to pleasure and the body\, a young nun in Paul Hindemith’s one-act opera Sancta Susanna discovers her body as a means of experiencing herself and God. Hindemith’s open display of female desire on the opera stage had the potential to cause scandal. In advance of concern\, the Stuttgart State Theaters withdrew the planned premiere in 1922. A good hundred years later\, Sancta Susanna is now coming to the stage in Stuttgart for the first time – in an opera performance by Florentina Holzinger\, who brings bodies into spectacular borderline experiences in her works. Holzinger follows Susanna’s act of self-assertion with her vision of a holy mass: Bach\, Rachmaninoff\, metal\, noise and contemporary compositions come together in a musical tour de force in which church rites and mysteries are appropriated\, but also their connection to sacrifice and Violence is processed. SANCTA counters the religious discipline and punishment of sexuality as a path to spiritual ecstasy with a pleasurable alternative. In search of transcendence\, body modification artists* twist the religious themes of crucifixion wounds\, penetration\, cannibalism and transformation; Show magicians* show their interpretations of biblical miracles; the Sistine Chapel becomes a climbing wall\, the opera becomes a rock musical\, God becomes a robot\, Jesus Christ becomes a Jesus Christ superstar. The Holy Mass becomes a spectacle. Magic and miracles\, says Holzinger\, must become a real possibility. Spider-like and dark\, loud and excessive\, funny and cathartic\, SANCTA challenges religious conventions while simultaneously renewing them.

SUMMARY:Follies
DESCRIPTION:Last chance to see Andrea Baker in this stunning performance. \nThe last big party before the theatre is torn down for good: what remains of the grandiose shows\, the stars in spectacular costumes and the bright lights? This is the question faced by the complex characters in the musical “Follies”. With the endless variety of Stephen Sondheim’s score\, a loving and brilliant pastiche of show music from the ‘20s\, ‘30s\, and ‘40s\, and the time-travel trickery of James Goldman’s book\, “Follies” is a glamorous and fascinating peek into a bygone era\, and a clear-eyed look at the transformation of relationships over time. This show features the wistful torch song “Losing My Mind\,” the showstopper “I’m Still Here\,” and “Broadway Baby\,” that determined ode to making it in show business. \nAndrea Baker: Hattie/Stella | Staatstheater Wiesbaden | Conductor: Albert Horne | Director: Tom Gerber

SUMMARY:Sancta by Hindemith
DESCRIPTION:The Austrian performance artist Florentina Holzinger continues to pulverize stage genres and viewing habits with another performance based on Paul Hindemith’s one-act opera Sancta Susanna\, which premiered in 1922. She and an ensemble of opera singers\, sex workers and body modification artists examine the transformation of female identity and bodies in religious systems and rites. The drama about a nun’s lust and sexuality is linked to new compositions by Johanna Doderer\, Born in Flamez\, Stefan Schneider and Nadine Neven Raihani as well as spiritual works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Sergei Rachmaninoff\, among others. A musical and performative reflection on the body and sexuality\, which becomes a celebration of a mass together with the audience. SUMMARY:Sancta by Hindemith
DESCRIPTION:Florentina Holzinger opens SANCTA with Paul Hindemith’s one-act opera Sancta Susanna \, in which a nun experiences brutal punishment for her sexual self-determination. SANCTA presents a pleasurable alternative to the religious discipline and punishment of sexuality in order to achieve religious ecstasy. Spider-like and dark\, loud and excessive\, funny and cathartic\, SANCTA challenges religious conventions in an attempt to renew them at the same time.

SUMMARY:Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha
DESCRIPTION:Originally written by Scott Joplin (c. 1911)\, Treemonisha is one of the few pieces set soon after the abolition of slavery\, written by a survivor of that era.
