Babylon

With his opera Babylon, Jörg Widmann dared to do something extremely rare: the really big hit. And he succeeded. In Babylon many things sound new in unexpected ways. The composer did not simply write new music here, but rather he created something like a summation of previous music. Widmann transferred the Babylonian confusion of languages to the level of music, and so the beauty, size and liveliness of the most diverse eras and styles are miraculously present. But all of this doesn’t sound randomly pieced together or borrowed, but rather fresh, overwhelming and always new.
